Darren Bond will referee his third Burnley game this season when he takes charge of our game at Middlesbrough having previously refereed the home games against Luton and Preston either side of the away game at Sheffield United.

Bond had refereed just one Burnley game before this season; that was the League Cup tie against Leeds in 2017, and that game added to the three this season has given him a current RATE THE REF rating of 59.42 out of a hundred.

The Lancashire based referee took charge of his first Football League game at Burton in August 2012, a 6-2 win against Wimbledon, joined the Select Group 2 in the summer of 2016 and is now enjoying a seventh successive season refereeing predominantly in the Championship.

He’s having a busy 2022/23 season and tonight will be his 36th game in a season that kicked off for him at the end of July with Sunderland’s Championship game against Coventry. Tonight will be his 27th Championship game but, significantly, he’s now refereed four Premier League games.

It’s often the case that a referee being considered for a step up to the Select Group might be given one Premier League game in the previous season, but four would suggest that he’s very likely to step up this summer. He’s refereed two games at Brentford and one each at Leicester, his first Premier League game, and at Bournemouth.

He’s not a referee shy to use his cards and he’s already passed 150 this season with 149 yellow and four red cards. Seventy of those yellow cards have gone to home team players with 79 to away team players. Three of the red cards, those in the Championship, have all gone to away team players. He sent off Cardiff’s Callum Robinson in their South Wales derby defeat at Swansea in October and Hull’s Benjamin Tette was the next as they went down 1-0 at Sheffield United.

More recently he dismissed Reading’s Mamadou Loum in a 2-1 defeat at Blackburn but his last red card, three days after the one at Blackburn, saw Shandon Baptiste sent off in Brentford’s 1-1 home draw against Leicester.

His last Championship game was last Saturday when he took charge of Sheffield United’s 1-0 win at Norwich but three days ago he refereed Bournemouth’s 2-0 home defeat against Brighton. Bournemouth’s Lewis Cook and Brighton goalkeeper Jason Steele were the two players carded in this game.

The fourth official today is Matt Donohue who refereed our 4-0 home win against Huddersfield in February.
