Burnley’s reward for beating Newcastle United on penalties tonight is a home draw in round three against Rochdale who beat Shrewsbury last night having been given a bye in the first round when Harrogate Town forfeited the game.

We haven’t played Rochdale since beating them in the second round of the FA Cup in 1993/94 and our two previous encounters in the League Cup were both first round affairs during our time in the Fourth Division.

They knocked us out in 1986/87, the Orient season. Having drawn 1-1 at Spotland, courtesy of a Leighton James goal, we were beaten 3-1 in the second leg at home when James again was our goal scorer from the penalty spot.

Two years later we gained revenge for that defeat. Brendan O’Connell, Paul Comstive, from the penalty spot, and George Oghani all scored in a 3-3 draw away but we wo  the second leg 2-1 with O’Connell scoring both goals.

This third League Cup meeting is likely to be played on Tuesday, 21st September.
