The Premier League’s most experienced referee Mike Dean will have the whistle tonight when we take on Liverpool at Anfield. the first time he will have refereed a Burnley game against either of the Merseyside Premier League clubs.

Dean has already refereed both teams this season. Back in October he refereed Liverpool’s 2-1 home win against Sheffield United and two weeks later was at Brighton for our 0-0 draw.

He’s no stranger to Burnley games; tonight’s will be his 47th. If you look down the list below you will see some poor performances, probably the game at Bradford City in 2002/03 and Southampton in 2016/17 standing out. He’s been conned, note the East Lancs derby in 2009/10, but alongside them there have been some outstanding performances, none more so than the West Brom FA Cup tie in 2009.

He’s refereed eleven Premier League games this season, the last of them the Leicester v Manchester United game on Boxing Day. He’s since added one League Cup semi-final and one FA Cup 3rd round tie to that list. In those 13 games he’s handed out no less than 46 yellow cards whilst also showing his red card to four players.

Of those yellows, 21 have gone to home team players with 25 to away team players, Back in September he sent off West Brom’s Kieran Gibbs in their 5-2 at Everton but it was cards galore at Molineux last month when he yellow carded nine players and sent off Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz and João Moutinho of Wolves before Villa won the game 1-0 with a stoppage time penalty. The other red card was Brentford’s Josh Dasilva in their 2-0 League Cup defeat at Spurs.

His most recent game was West Ham’s FA Cup win at Stockport. There were no cards in that game, his first card free game since Burnley v Wolves last season.

Anthony Taylor is the fourth official tonight; his most recent Burnley game in the middle was the 1-1 home draw against Everton. VAR man tonight is Lee Mason and he was at Burnley most recently for the home win against Wolves.
