Matt Taylor’s second stint as a Football League manager has ended even quicker than the first with news today that Shrewsbury Town have parted company with both him and his assistant Marcus Bignot.

Taylor took on the role of under-18 coach at Spurs when he hung up his playing boots in but left the Premier League club to become manager of Walsall in the summer of 2021. After losing his first three games, things picked up for him there but a run of seven successive defeats saw him dismissed in February.

He was out of management for over a year before replacing Steve Cotterill at Shrewsbury but a statement from the club today read: “It is with regret that Shrewsbury Town have decided to part company with head coach Matt Taylor.

“Matt arrived at the Croud Meadow in June and has always conducted himself with professionalism and integrity. But following a run that has seen us lose seven of our last eight games, the club feels a change is needed to improve results and performances on the pitch. Town would like to wish Matt and Marcus the best of luck for the future.”

BBC Radio Shropshire sports editor Nick Southall said it was inevitable and added: “What ultimately did for Taylor, apart from the slump in form, was the style of football. Fans calling the post-match phone in, said they were bored watching Shrewsbury play.”

That leaves Graham Coughlan (Newport), Graham Alexander (Bradford City) and the recently appointed Martin Paterson at Burton as the only three former Clarets remaining in Football League management.
