Our youth team have beaten Coventry City 2-1 this morning at Gawthorpe and once again the goals came from Michael Fowler who scored in the first minute of the game and then in the first minute of stoppage time.

It’s four goals in the first three games for new captain Fowler and it was typical goalscorer stuff this afternoon from him. He missed a good chance in the 89th minute but went looking again and when that next chance came he made absolutely no mistake.

He never looked as though he wouldn’t score and that’s exactly what he did as he planted the ball into the corner past the helpless Coventry goalkeeper.

It was a bright start for Burnley that could so easily have seen us increase that opening lead. Rhys Fenlon was causing them problems down the right and came close to getting on the scoresheet himself with a cross shot which eluded the oncoming Fowler before just missing the target.

But it changed on 24 minutes when Coventry equalised as they managed to get a ball over Adam Bruce with the ball dropping over the line. They looked the more likely for the remainder of the first half which ended at 1-1.

There was no doubt that Burnley looked the better in the second half and it was a surprise we weren’t able to get back in front earlier than we did. Chris Conn-Clarke came on as a substitute and caused them real problems. He probably should have scored himself but the Coventry goalkeeper, who was by now having an outstanding game, kept him out. Conn-Clarke then set up a good chance which went the same way.

Then, with less than a minute to go, we really should have won it. Fowler got clear but, with Mitchell George waiting for him to play the ball across, he blazed his shot way over the bar. The chance to win the game was gone, or so we thought.

Strikers don’t mind missing, they come back for more, and when he went clear again in the very first minute of stoppage time there was to be no mistake as this time he saw his shot across the goalkeeper nestle into the net.

It continues to be a good start for the Clarets at under-18 level. That’s now three out of three with Fowler having scored four of the five goals.

The team was: Adam Bruce, Kane Patterson, Dan Moss (Edon Pruti 67), Richard Taylor, Matt Rain, Rhys Fenlon, Ethan Kershaw (Mitchell George 75), Kian Yari, Kai Smith (Chris Conn-Clarke 61), Terry Mupariwa, Michael Fowler. Subs not used: Harry Allen, Joe Conley.
