It was all Dwight on the night against Olympiacos
Despite going out of the Europa League as August drew to a close, there were a lot of positives to take from our draw in the play-off second leg against Olympiacos, none more so than the performance of 18-year-old Dwight McNeil who was given his first start in the first team.
He played for most of the game, coming off 15 minutes from the end to a standing ovation from all four stands at Turf Moor after a display that offered more than a little promise.
His performance won him both the man of the match vote and the player ratings on the night when the scores were much higher than in the previous game at Fulham but repeated that game with the same top four in both the vote and the ratings.
McNeil convincingly won the man of the match with 53% of the vote, followed by Jeff Hendrick who won a 21% share. Ashley Westwood came third with 9% and Charlie Taylor, this time playing at left-back, was fourth with 5% of the vote.
Onto the ratings and that same top four with McNeil securing a rating of 8.14 out of 10, again beating Hendrick who scored 8.09. Westwood came third with 7.48 and a rating of 7.47 out of 10 secured fourth place for Taylor.
It’s a maximum ten for McNeil, his first ever points, with Hendrick picking up six points towards the Up the Clarets Player of the Year. Westwood won four points with two points going to Taylor.
That brings the month of August to an end with an incredible eight games played in the month. We’ve also included the July game at Aberdeen within the month too so the current player of the year table is also the final result for the player of the month.
The winner is Jack Cork who has beaten James Tarkowski by four points. Joe Hart and Hendrick are the other two players who have passed 20 points.
