Bobby Madley will referee Burnley’s game tonight against West Ham at the London Stadium in what will be the first occasion he’s refereed us in the Premier League.

The 31-year-old Madley from Ossett in West Yorkshire refereed for the first time in the Premier League in April 2013 when he was in charge of a game between Southampton and West Brom at St. Mary’s. It was certainly a baptism of fire for him with Southampton’s Gaston Ramirez and Danny Fox both receiving red cards along with West Brom’s Marc-Antoine Fortune.

He’s certainly recovered from that. He didn’t referee us during our last Premier League season but is now used virtually exclusively in the top division. Last season he was only twice used in the Football League, the last of them the Brighton v Derby draw that left us on the brink of promotion. This season the only time he’s been out of the Premier League was for a League Cup tie and that was between two Premier League clubs.

We’ve had our problems with him in the past never more so than when he sent off Kieran Trippier in a 1-0 home defeat against Charlton in 2012 supposedly for handball on the line. There was also the League Cup defeat against tonight’s opponents West Ham when, at 0-0, he awarded them a nonsense of a penalty supposedly for a foul by Jason Shackell.

But he’s also had his good games although I’m not sure Steve McClaren and Derby would agree when he sent off Chris Martin in our 2-0 win against them in March 2014, his last Burnley game.

This season he’s refereed a total of 13 games in which there have been 64 yellow and two red cards. Of the yellow cards, 29 have gone to home team players and 35 to away team players. Both players sent off were home players. He dismissed Leicester’s Marcin Wasilewski in their 4-2 defeat against Leicester and Watford’s Miguel Britos in a 1-0 loss to Stoke. Both were right at the end of the respective games.

His last game was Manchester United’s 1-0 win against Tottenham on Sunday. Six players received yellow cards in that game. They were Antonio Valencia, Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan of United and Tottenham’s Kyle Walker, Danny Rose and Victor Wanyama.

There’s no doubt that Madley is a much improved referee from the one that last took charge of a Burnley game but, as his record shows, there are likely to be cards.

The assistant referees are Ian Hussin (Merseyside) and Marc Perry (West Midlands). The fourth official is Graham Scott (Oxfordshire) whose last Burnley game was the 1-0 win against Hull last season.

Bobby Madley currently has a RATE THE REF rating of 67.08 out of 100.
