Burnley’s game at Arsenal tomorrow will be refereed by Andre Marriner, one of the Premier League more experienced referees who is from Sheldon in the West Midlands.

The 47-year-old is, alongside Martin Atkinson, the second longest serving of the select group referees. The pair were promoted in 2005 and that leaves only Mike Dean, an original select group official from 2001, as having been on the list longer.

Despite that, an despite this being our fourth season in the Premier League, he will referee us for only the sixth time at the top level. He wasn’t given a single Burnley game in our 2009/10 season but refereed us three times in 2014/15, once last season and this will be his second Burnley game this season having been in charge at Swansea in February. That was his ninth Burnley game in total but only his second away from Turf Moor.

The assistant referees are Richard West (East Riding) and Sian Massey-Ellis (West Midlands). The fourth official is Graham Scott (Oxfordshire) whose last two Burnley games were the FA Cup defeats against Lincoln and Manchester City in the last two seasons. He refereed their first away game of the season, a 1-0 victory at Stoke, and has subsequently refereed three games at the Emirates.

Arsenal have seen more of him. Tomorrow will be his fifth game in charge of the Gunners this season.. These were their 3-1 and 3-0 defeats against the Manchester clubs, United and City, and more recently their 3-2  win against Southampton.

All but one of his four red cards have come at the Emirates too. He sent off Newcastle’s Jonjo Shelvey in their opening day defeat at Newcastle. The next was Paul Pogba in United’s win at Arsenal and more recently he dismissed Southampton’s Jack Stephens and Arsenal’s Mohamed Elneny although Elneny’s red card was rightly overturned.

He’s refereed 31 domestic games, as well as one World Cup game and one in the Europa League. In those domestic games there have been 76 yellow cards. Of those, 39 have gone to home team players and 37 to away team players.

HIs last game was the 0-0 draw between Liverpool and Stoke a week ago at Anfield. There were three yellow cards in that game with Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk booked alongside Stoke pair Mame Biram Diouf and Peter Crouch.

We’ve been fine with him over the years on the occasions he has refereed us and his performances see him in 3rd place in RATE THE REF with a rating of 77.50 out of 100. A performance with that kind of score will be fine tomorrow.
