1718 burnley conor mitchell 00 500x500Last week, following the trip to Cork, goalkeeping coach Billy Mercer said that we were looking to get Northern Ireland under-21 international goalkeeper Conor Mitchell out on loan and it looks as though he’s set to move up to Scotland for the season with Premiership club St. Johnstone.

Conor was in the side that won at Stalybridge last week but he wasn’t involved with any of the teams over the weekend, nor was he at Preston last night. That’s all been explained by St. Johnstone boss Tommy Wright who told the Dundee Courier: “We’ve got Conor Mitchell up from Burnley and we’re hoping to conclude a season long loan deal in the next day or two.

“He’s an under-21 international, and with him and Mark Hurst there will be real competition for Zander Clark. We’ve had four or five options but, having brought Conor up, we’d like to get something done with him.”

He might not be the only goalkeeper going out on loan. Last Saturday, while the youth and under-23s were both in action, there was no sign of either Aidan Stone or Adam Bruce. Up the Clarets understands they were both playing elsewhere, with Stone in goal for Lancaster City and Bruce for Padiham.

However, 18-year-old George McMahon was involved with the under-23s and he was also warming up with the goalkeepers at Preston last night. I’d expect the Republic of Ireland under-18 goalkeeper, who is currently with Rotherham, to soon be confirmed as a Burnley player.
