New leaders in the under-21 league
Just a couple of weeks ago we were reporting what such good form our under-21s were enjoying with eight wins in nine games, but that’s all changed since. In last week’s review we reported two defeats and this week it’s a draw followed by another loss.
The draw came last Friday in the toughest of games possible, away against Sheffield United. We led 1-0 through a Tommy McDermott goal but were so unfortunate to fall behind in the second half with Sheffield United equalising via a cruel deflection and then scoring from the spot after a very soft penalty award. We did at least get a draw with a late goal from substitute Vernon Masara.
Tuesday proved too much at Ipswich for an incredibly young team that was beaten 4-1 with our goal coming from Tom Tweedy (pictured).
We are still sixth but all those games in hand, that looked likely to elevate us into the top four, are all but gone. We have one game in hand on Fleetwood and Barnsley who sit fourth and fifth but they have four and three point advantages on us respectively.
Everyone has been keeping an eye on the top with Sheffield United’s games in hand expected to take them back above Birmingham. They are now six points behind with four games in hand but Sheffield Wednesday have just won five games on the trot and have moved into first place, ahead of Birmingham on goal difference. They too, have played four games more than Sheffield United who remain favourites to win the league.
Millwall are favourites in the south. They are eight points ahead of QPR and a further point clear of Bournemouth with just one more game played. The top two both had good days on Tuesday; Millwall beat Coventry 6-0 and QPR went one better with a 7-0 victory against Crewe.
With so many teams fielding trialists as they look to next season, we confirmed last week that Callum West had played for Hull. Although he didn’t find the net in their big win, our under-18 striker Rohan Vaughan, one of the players we noted had been missing recently, was in the QPR team against Crewe.
This week kicks off with two outstanding north group games tomorrow with the north v south games getting underway on Sunday when we entertain Charlton with the game kicking off at 1 p.m. on the Turf. A win would bring us level on points with Barnsley.
