Michael OIiver will referee our Premier League game against Everton at Goodison Park tomorrow and I don’t think it can come as a big surprise that one of the more experienced referees has been allocated to this game given the issues both clubs had last Saturday, although with Everton it was Oliver himself on who failed to see the clear penalty missed by Sam Barrott. And of course ourselves with Darren England and the penalty that wasn’t.

Oliver has refereed us eighteen times in the Premier League; only Anthony Taylor of the current referees has taken charge of more of our top flight games. His Football League and cup games take that up to 26 games in total.

He’s had his moments with Championship games against Swansea in 2008 and Blackpool in 2011 readily coming to mind, as does the home defeat against Spurs in 2017, but overall, his performances see him in fifth place in RATE THE REF with a rating of 72.29 out of a hundred. The four above him have only refereed us eight times between them.
Only Taylor has refereed more than Oliver’s twenty Premier League games this season. All of his other eight games have come either in internationals or European competition. Those twenty games in England have seen him show eighty yellow and four red cards. Of those yellows, 34 have gone to home team players and 46 to away team players.

He’s refereed us once this season at Arsenal. In his previous game five days earlier, he dismissed Tottenham pair Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie in a game that ended in a 4-1 home defeat for them against Chelsea. He then sent off Arsenal’s Fabio Vieira against us, the easiest of decision. His most recent red card came in December when he sent off Manchester United’s Diogo Dalot in their 0-0 draw at Liverpool.

His most recent game in the middle was Nottingham Forest’s 3-1 home win this week against Fulham. The only yellow card in that game went the way of Forest’s substitute goalkeeper Matt Turner and that was for leaving his seat on the bench and kicking a second ball into play to stop Fulham from restarting the game quickly.

The fourth official tomorrow is Steve Martin. It was October 2022 when he last refereed us. That was the 4-0 home win against Swansea, and he sent off Swansea’s Joel Piroe. David Coote is on VAR duty tomorrow. He last refereed us last month when Bournemouth beat us 2-0 at home.
