Burnley’s season got underway six days ago with the Europa League game at Aberdeen. It’s the earliest we’ve started a season, our first ever competitive game in July, and it needed a Sam Vokes goal ten minutes from time to earn us a draw going into tomorrow’s second leg.

1718 burnley sam vokes 00 500x500The game saw the return of the man of the match vote and the player ratings here at Up the Clarets and it was the goalscorer, who only played the last quarter of the game as a substitute, who won them both, just as he’d done in the opening Premier League game last season at Chelsea.

Vokes polled 40% of the vote and that was just over double the number of votes won by Aaron Lennon who finished second with a 20% share, that after a particularly good first half. Just behind Lennon in third place was Jόhann Berg Guðmundsson who secured 19% while in fourth place was Jack Cork who won just 7% of the vote.

Three of the top four were also in the top four in the player ratings, again won by Sam Vokes whose rating was 7.36 out of 10. This time, ahead of the two wide players, second place went to debutant goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard. He came on in the 14th minute as a replacement for Nick Pope and had a good game with one second half save standing out. His rating was 6.93 and below him in third and fourth places were Lennon and Guðmundsson with ratings of 6.54 and 6.43 out of 10 respectively.

That results brings with it the first points towards the Up the Clarets 2018/19 Player of the Year. Vokes has picked up the maximum ten points and there are five points for Lennon, three for Jόhann Berg Guðmundsson and Lindegaard one point for Cork.

The voting and rating will all be underway again tomorrow night after the second leg against Aberdeen and should be available within an hour of the final whistle. It will run until the end of Sunday.
