The latest draw two days ago against Sheffield Wednesday took our under-23s up to second in the northern group of the Professional Development League and we stayed there yesterday when Crewe Alexandra suffered a big defeat at Barnsley.

1920 burnley jordan cropper 00 500x500With Nottingham Forest’s home game against Leeds falling victim to the weather, it has left us just one point behind them while we now sit a point ahead of Crewe and two points clear of Birmingham, who have won twice during the week, Barnsley, winners against Crewe, and Hull who won at Wigan. Three of those five all have a game in hand on us; Forest and Hull have played two games less.

It really is very tight with Leeds, currently eighth, able to get past us if they won all of their three games in hand. Only the two Sheffield clubs and Bolton are struggling with Bolton a long way behind having won one and lost the other seven of their games.

Coventry are second in the south group but Watford’s lead over them has now extended to eight points with them bringing Ipswich’s mini-revival to an end. Coventry had no game but they remain second with Charlton only drawing at Millwall and Cardiff losing at home against Birmingham.

There are only two league games in the next week., both of them on Monday. Bristol City are at home against Cardiff in the south group and there is also an outstanding north v south group game between Crewe and Millwall. That’s because it is Premier League Cup week with 15 scheduled games although the first of them between Portsmouth and Exeter, which should have been played this afternoon, was postponed.

The player featured this week is Jordan Cropper who played right back in Monday’s draw against Sheffield Wednesday.
