It’s eight years since Kieran Trippier turned up at Burnley on loan from Manchester City, following Ben Mee from the Etihad Stadium, but today the England international right-back has moved from Tottenham Hotspur and signed for Atletico Madrid.

1112 burnley kieran trippier 00 300x300I recall the first time I saw him in Burnley colours. It was at Oldham in a pre-season friendly; he’d come in as we prepared to sell Tyrone Mears to Bolton, and the one thing I remember from that night was he and Alex MacDonald taking the posts when we conceded a corner and me not quite knowing which was which.

He soon became a Turf Moor favourite but he had problems at the start of his second season when he was, in his own words, unfit and praised the work Sean Dyche did with him to get him back and moving towards the outstanding player he became for us.

Promotion to the Premier League was followed by relegation and that’s when it was right that he moved on, especially when it was Tottenham, one of the top six, chasing him. He had a fight for a first team place initially because of the presence of Kyle Walker but when Walker moved he became first choice, won his place in the England side, memorably scoring in the World Cup semi-final.

There have been suggestions for some time that he might be moving on with any number of European and English clubs linked with him and it has been reported that he’s now signed a four year contract with Atletico for a £21.7 million fee which will be confirmed this evening.

Hugely popular at Burnley, I’m sure all our fans will wish him the very best in Spain.
