Marvin Sordell and Luke O’Neill have both secured their immediate futures with Sordell committing to a long term deal at Burton Albion and O’Neill making the move to Gillingham.

Sordell has played for four different clubs over the last two seasons. He kicked off 2015/16 with us, featuring in the early games of the season, before moving to Colchester. Last season saw him play for Coventry and then Burton where he has now landed himself a deal until the end of the 2019/20 season.

1415 burnley marvin sordell 00 630x420Burton boss Nigel Clough is delighted. “The second half of the season he was a major reason in us staying up,” he said of the striker. “The quality and consistency of his performances was excellent. We hope he will take it on again next season. He made a big impact when he came in January so we are delighted he will be with us for a few more seasons.”

Sordell, who became a dad last week, said: “I’m delighted to have that security. I scored a few goals and helped the team stay up and that was a fantastic achievement for everyone at the club and hopefully we can kick off from that now as well.

“It will be good now to get a full pre-season and start the new season quite strongly which will be very helpful for us as well. The minimum we want to achieve is to stay up again but we want to be improving and pushing on as much as possible.”

While Sordell always had an offer to stay at Burton, things weren’t quite as secure for O’Neill who was released by Southend last month after two years at Roots Hall, but he’s retained his place in League One with a move to Gillingham.

O’Neill, who signed for Burnley in the summer of 2012 and made one league appearance as a late substitute in the final game of the 2012/13 season, has committed to two years at Priestfield Stadium.

“It’s a great move for me,” said the 25-year-old right-back. “I had options from other clubs but the major part of me signing for Gillingham was after speaking with Ady (Pennock, the manager) and Peter Taylor who filled me with confidence, assuring me that I would be playing games. I’m really looking forward to joining up with everyone for pre-season.”
