Goals from Sam Unwin and Ne-Jai Tucker having given the under-23s a 2-0 win at St. Mary’s Stadium against Southampton this afternoon and with it a first victory of the season.

Things started to go Burnley’s way in this game when Saints’ goalkeeper Harry Lewis was sent off just past the half hour after racing out of goal to foul Joe McGlynn who was clean through.

Southampton immediately brought on their substitute goalkeeper and it took until stoppage time at the end of the first half to take advantage but in the fourth of five minutes added on, Unwin (pictured), who had come on as substitute, headed home from Owen Dodgson’s ball.

We could have doubled the advantage just past the hour. Unwin was fouled inside the box but Max Thompson saw his penalty turned away by Southampton substitute goalkeeper Oliver Wright.

Dodgson played his part when Tucker completed the scoring in the 74th minute. He was fouled for the free kick from which Tucker scored to make it 2-0.

The win has, for now, lifted us three places in the table but that could change tomorrow with games involving those we’ve passed being played.
