Last Friday’s defeat at Nottingham Forest, coupled with Birmingham City’s win against Cardiff City on the following day has left us as clear second favourites to land that final play-off place despite Monday’s win against Colchester United.

1819 burnley marley blair 00 500x500Leaders Leeds are a long way ahead now but there are still four other teams in with an opportunity of finishing second although Birmingham are the most likely. Both they and us have 45 points, followed by Crewe on 44 and Bolton on 43, but Birmingham have one more game remaining and travel to Bristol City on Monday. Should they win that, they will all but clinch it because of their superior goal difference.

We travel to Charlton next Tuesday. We have to go there in the hope that Birmingham haven’t won and then win to put the Blues under some pressure in their final game.

There is a similar battle in the south group. Ipswich are already champions but Coventry and Crystal Palace are the two with a chance of finishing second. Coventry currently hold a one point lead but Palace have one more game to play.

Champions Ipswich played yesterday and beat Watford 2-1, no surprise given Watford have had a disappointing season and lined up with seven trialists in their team. They haven’t named any of them but one was Marley Blair (pictured), recently released by us. He’s scored four goals for us this season, one in the league against Birmingham and three in the Premier League Cup. Yesterday, he scored Watford’s goal, cutting in from the right before unleashing a fierce strike that flew into the top corner. It might have helped earn him a deal there.
