Burnley fell to a stoppage time Tottenham winner at Wembley that was a relief to manager Mauricio Pochettino who celebrated as if he’d won his first ever trophy as a manager.

“That character is so important, and belief and the faith,” he said. “That is what please me the most. To see Oliver Skipp making his debut or Ben Davies playing centre back with Toby, it’s fantastic news for the team, playing one way or another, with different names.

“Keeping the belief is so important and we’re so pleased with that. I celebrated at the end because we knew it was going to be very tough and the three points mean a lot to us. These three points are so important for us to keep a very good position in the table.”

Sean Dyche, obviously disappointed with the result, was pleased with how his new look formation worked and how his team played. He said: “We thought it was going to be that type of game from our point of view. We came down here with a solid formation, with a change of shape. That’s not easy, but we’ve worked on it all week because I felt it was appropriate. I’m open minded in that respect and I’ve thought about it many times, but I didn’t want to do it in a three-game week. Today was the right moment and the players delivered against a top side who can create lots of chances.

“Ironically, it was a big boot down the middle at the end that they scored from, but, generally, the defensive framework of the side was good and overall we are just frustrated because the players put in a shift, not just physically, but mentally.”

He added: “Joe hasn’t had that much to do, and we attempted to break and counter, but we are still searching for that last moment. But there’s been good signs now in four of the last five games. There’s a resilience again and the details are getting more clear-minded. We’re still a little bit away from taking that balance into the attacking side, but we aren’t playing teams like this every week.

“Of course, we need results, but a lot of the game is about mentality. Over a season those performances will get you more, whereas earlier in the season we weren’t finding those on a consistent basis, but the players are rising again and although we know we have to start picking up points, we have to start somewhere.”
