1617 burnley ashley westwood 00 500x500Burnley FC Supporters Groups held their Player of the Year Awards evening on a night that saw two former Clarets from very different eras  see Ashley Westwood win the major player of the year award at the end of the evening.

There was no clean sweep of awards this season with the various supporters’ clubs selected a wide range of players for their awards but it was Westwood who took the main honour from those present as the overall player of the year for 2018/19.

The first of those two former Clarets was 88-year-old goalkeeper Colin McDonald. A year ago, he won the special achievement award, sixty years after he’d played in the World Cup for England. Unfortunately, Colin wasn’t well enough to attend and Tom Heaton collected the award on his behalf and then presented it to Colin at the training ground on a special day last October.

McDonald was invited to tonight’s event and this year saw that special achievement award go to Wade Elliott who ten years ago scored the goal that saw Burnley win promotion to the Premier League for the very first time.

Among the awards, West Yorkshire Clarets awarded the Roger Howarth Unsung Hero Award to assistant manager Ian Woan. This award is in memory of their member Roger who passed away during the 2017/18 season. The Janice Fretwell Award, in memory of Janice who passed away in November 2012, went to manager Sean Dyche on reaching 300 games as manager. Janice’s final game watching the Clarets was on 3rd November 2012, a 2-0 win against Wolves which was Sean’s first as manager.

Overall, a total of nine players won awards on what has proved to be another successful night for Burnley FC Supporters Groups.
