The under-23s got the Premier League Cup campaign off to a good start tonight with a 3-0 win against Sheffield United in a game played at Chesterfield.

Sheffield United had won the only game in Group D previously; they beat Everton 3-1 but tonight them found themselves 2-0 down at half time against the Clarets and, despite having a good spell in the second half, looked a well beaten side by the final whistle.

There wasn’t too much between the teams for the first half hour, but it was Burnley who took the lead soon afterwards with Michael Mellon heading home a Ne-Jai Tucker cross.

We stepped things up then with Mellon close to a second before Tucker, having got an assist on the opener, doubled the lead when he scored from a free kick just outside the box, awarded after a foul on Mark Helm.

There was always likely to be a reaction from Paul Heckinbottom’s Blades and they did create a couple of half chances in the second half but always knowing that a third goal for the Clarets would just about secure the win for us.

They couldn’t get a goal before the game turned Burnley’s way and the inevitable third for the Clarets was delayed only because of two outstanding saves from their goalkeeper Marcus Dewhurst who first denied Helm and then made an even better save to keep out a Mellon header.

Even Dewhurst could do nothing with a Helm shot from outside the box. He was relieved to see the woodwork come to his rescue, but there was nothing he could when a superb Finlay Armstrong cross was converted by substitute Max Thompson (pictured) from close range.

A win to kick things off with our next game in this competition on Tuesday of next week when we face Peterborough at Leyland.
