Atkinson back to ref at Burnley for first time in over two years
Martin Atkinson hasn’t refereed a Burnley game since we won 1-0 at Bournemouth in the week before Christmas 2019 while it is over two years since he last refereed at Turf Moor but he’s back tonight for our home game against Manchester City.
The last time he was in the middle at the Turf was in January 2019 when we came from behind to beat Fulham 2-1 and his only Burnley games since have been the victories at Bournemouth later that season and then the one referred to above in 2019/20. That’s been significantly different to recent seasons. The Fulham and Bournemouth games were two of four in 2018/19 and in the previous season he refereed us on five occasions including the home game against Manchester City, as he does tonight.
In his 17 games this season he’s stepped outside the Premier League just once and that was the League Cup semi-final between the two Manchester clubs. In those 17 games there have been 43 yellow and two red cards. Of those yellows, 23 have gone to home team players with 20 to away team players. He sent off Crystal Palace’s Luka Milivojevic in a 2-0 defeat at Wolves back in October and Jake Livermore was the other player shown red in West Brom’s 3-0 home defeat against Aston Villa in the week before Christmas.
Atkinson’s most recent game was that between Spurs and Liverpool last Thursday. Spurs had Steven Bergwijn yellow carded alongside Liverpool pair Thiago and Nathaniel Phillips.
Anthony Taylor will be fourth official tonight, he last refereed us in the 1-1 home draw against Everton while Stuart Attwell, who is becoming our VAR regular, is at Stockley Park again. He hasn’t refereed a Burnley game since the 3-1 win at Brighton in February 2019.
