The Premier League 2 game against Newcastle United, initially rescheduled for this afternoon at Gawthorpe, will now be played this evening at the County Ground, Leyland.

It’s the first time we’ve played a home league game other than at the training ground since January when a Dara Costelloe goal gave us a 1-1 draw against Birmingham. Since, we’ve played a number of cup games but only three league games, two of them away and last Saturday’s home game against Southampton which was played at Gawthorpe.

We go into the game in ninth place in the table with 29 points from our 21 games. We still have an outside chance of making the end of season play-offs but it is very much an outside chance. Wolves currently hold the final play-off spot and they are on 37 points.

Newcastle, our opponents tonight, are just outside, two points behind Wolves. They’d have been in there had they beaten Middlesbrough last Friday but surprisingly fell to a 4-2 defeat against the then bottom of the league.

Our recent form has improved. We won at Middlesbrough back in December but didn’t pick up another league win until we travelled to Sunderland two and a half weeks ago. We won that game 2-0 and followed it up with the 2-1 victory against Southampton last week.

We were beaten 2-0 at Newcastle earlier in the season when we fell to two Dylan Stephenson goals and, although we won at Newcastle last season, we fell to a 3-1 defeat in the home fixture played in September 2020 with Max Thompson.

Kick off tonight at Leyland is 7 p.m.
