Ashley Barnes has been struggling for some weeks with a groin injury and missed last week’s game at Chelsea with Sean Dyche confirming he was receiving second opinions from two specialists.

Today, the club have confirmed that Barnes will be out for a spell as he prepares for surgery for a hernia repair and that surgery will be carried out tomorrow.

Manager Sean Dyche said: “Hopefully he will have a smooth recovery. You don’t like losing good players but, equally, it allows other players to come in and perform and that’s what we’ll be looking for them to do.”

In terms of the strikers, Jay Rodriguez has been back in training this week following illness while Chris Wood hopes to be fit to face his former club having suffered a broken nose in last week’s game at Stamford Bridge.

Barnes started the season in fire with four goals in the first three games. But he’s struggled for form and goals recently, and that’s no surprise given the injury. He missed the game at Leicester earlier in the season and more recently wasn’t in the side at Spurs or Chelsea while being used as a substitute in the games against Manchester City and Everton. No timescale has been given for his return to full fitness.
