Beyer and JBG share the honours in Coventry win
Central defender Jordan Beyer and midfielder Jóhann Berg Guðmundsson were considered to be our best two players in last Saturday’s 1-0 home win against Coventry City.
They shared the top two places in the man of the match vote and player ratings with Beyer turning in another excellent performance in defence, this time adding to it with his first ever goal to win the game for us. Guðmundsson came on at half time and helped turn the game our way after a disappointing first half and it was his corner that Beyer headed home for the goal.
Guðmundsson won the man of the match, winning 39% of the vote with Beyer behind him having secured a 31% share. Two more defenders took the next two places with Ian Maatsen coming third with 11% and Charlie Taylor, playing alongside Beyer in the centre of defence, taking fourth place with 4%.
The top two switched places in the player ratings. This time Beyer came top with a rating of 7.88 out of ten and that was just ahead of Guðmundsson who scored 7.81. Nathan Tella, who played just the final half an hour having come on for Manuel Benson, was third with 7.50 and 7.40 out of ten ensured fourth place for Maatsen.
Both Beyer and Guðmundsson won eight points towards the Up the Clarets Player of the Year with this result while there were three points for Maatsen, two for Tella and one point for Taylor. It’s made little difference at the top of the table where Jack Cork has a 21 point lead over Benson who, in turn, is 33 points ahead of Anass Zaroury in third place. There are now a cluster of players just behind Zaroury with Beyer now the closest to him.
The next vote will be underway tomorrow night following the West Brom game. The Coventry result is below along with the current player of the year table.
