Our under-18s remain fourth in the north group of the U18 Professional Development League having won 4-1 at Swansea last Saturday, our tenth league win of the season.

Benji Wetshi gave us the lead in the first minute of the game and in the second half a second from Brando Ly was followed by a late brace scored by Lucas Wane, the second of them from the penalty spot. Swansea’s consolation goal was netted in stoppage time by Sammy Henia-Kamau.

With four games to play, it’s unlikely we will move any higher in the table. Third place Barnsley have two points more but still have eight games to play. Sheffield Wednesday are a further two points ahead with four games remaining.

Only Barnsley can now mathematically challenge current leaders Birmingham. Like us, they have just four games remaining but are sat on sixty points. They hit QPR for eight last week, and it would take an amazing turnaround for them to lose their lead.

Likewise, Peterborough are unlikely to move off the bottom of the table. They are twelve points behind Wigan and with a far worse goal difference. One more defeat from their remaining five games will confirm their bottom place.

Colchester are similarly placed at the bottom of the south group. They are eleven points behind QPR but closed the gap last week when they surprisingly beat Sheffield Wednesday. QPR, meanwhile, have been the whipping boys this season when it comes to conceding goals. They’ve conceded five or more eight times and the eight they conceded against Birmingham was only their third worst defensively having previously conceded nine against Fleetwood and twelve against Millwall. Four more will take the number conceded into three figures.

With Birmingham and Peterborough all but claiming top and bottom in the north, and with Colchester set to end the season in bottom place in the south group, there is at least a challenge at the top in the south.

Bristol City are currently top and six points clear of Charlton who are second. However, Charlton have three games in hand.

This week’s fixtures are predominantly between north and south with the north teams at home. That includes Burnley v Cardiff but also the clash of the top teams with Bristol City travelling to Birmingham.

The player featured this week is Brandon Ly who scored his first Burnley goal in the win against Swansea.
