Defour shines in Spurs defeat
Burnley suffered the biggest home defeat in almost seven years when Spurs beat us 3-0 at the Turf last Saturday but Steven Defour’s performance was highlighted with wins in both the man of the match vote and the player ratings.
Defour didn’t just win them; he won both convincingly and in the man of the match he polled 53% of the vote. Goalkeeper Nick Pope took second place with 11% while Phil Bardsley was third with 8% and Jόhann Berg Guðmundsson fourth with a 7% share.
Despite this being a very good Tottenham performance, the Burnley players were certainly marked very low in the player ratings. No player reached seven out of ten for a good performance and only three players scored six for an average performance.
Defour was as close as you could get to seven though with a rating of 6.98 out of 10 with the two full backs following him. Charlie Taylor was second and Bardsley third with ratings of 6.14 and 6.09 respectively while fourth place was claimed by substitute Ashley Barnes with a rating of 5.95 out of 10.
Defour won the maximum ten points towards the Up the Clarets Player of the Year. Bardsley won four points with three points for Pope and Taylor and one for Barnes and Guðmundsson.
Those points are significant. Defour’s recent form has seen him close the gap on James Tarkowski and pass Jack Cork at the top of the player of the year table and these points have also seen him pass Tarkowski and move into first place again. He has a three point lead over Tarkowski who is a further eight points ahead of Cork. Guðmundsson and Pope are now joint fourth but a further nineteen points behind Cork.
