Burnley’s game against Aberdeen at Pittodrie last Thursday was refereed by Berliner Daniel Siebert; Thursday’s second leg will be in the charge of Italian Massimiliano Irrati.

The experienced 39-year-old Irrati from Tuscany has now taken charge of over 80 Serie A games in Italy and was also on duty at the recent World Cup in Russia as one of the 13 VAR officials. He was involved in 14 games including the opener between Russia and Saudi Arabia and the final when he was selected as the main VAR official.

He made his Serie A debut in March 2012 when he was referee for the Bologna v Chievo Verona game and almost five years later was given his first international for a friendly between San Marino and Andorra.

Irrati will stand no nonsense and that’s not just on the pitch. In 2016 he temporarily suspended a Serie A game between Lazio and Napoli because of racism in the stands.

His assistant referees at Turf Moor will be Lorenzo Manganelli and Sergio Ranghetti, while Gianluca Manganiello will be the fourth official.
