Former Claret Jay Rodriguez has today joined West Bromwich Albion from Southampton on a four year deal.

Jay ends five years on the south coast with this month just weeks before his 28th birthday after a difficult time following the cruciate injury he suffered in April 2014. He’s never really been able to establish himself back in the team and last season appeared to be out of favour with manager Claude Puel.

West Brom tried to sign him last summer, and again in January. Now Tony Pulis has got his man with Jay saying: “After one or two near misses I’m absolutely buzzing to be here. The most important thing for any player is to be wanted and Tony Pulis and Albion have made it clear just how much they have wanted me to job. That’s fantastic for any footballer to hear.

“I’m genuinely delighted to be joining a club of Albion’s stature. The team is full of top players and it’s pretty clear that they are also a great set of lads.”

Chairman John Williams, previously at Blackburn, said on completing the transfer: “I am delighted to welcome Jay to The Hawthorns. We tried to sign him during the two previous windows and it’s third time ‘deal done’. Our persistence has been rewarded.

“Jay is a proven Premier League striker, and England international and a player who will give Tony more attacking options.”
