Wigan go clear at the top
Wigan won at Tranmere last Saturday and with Rochdale holding Bury to a draw it has taken Wigan two points clear at the top of the Youth Alliance League with the top two now having four games still to play.
It looked on paper as though Wigan had the tougher of the two games but it didn’t work that way with Dale, who have had a less successful season than usual, claiming a point against their close rivals.
Walsall won again to go within a point of Bury but they are no longer realistically title contenders. They have two games remaining but should they win both it will only require Wigan to win one of their remaining four games to finish above them.
The big shock result came at the bottom of the league, however, with Morecambe winning for only a third time this season. Prior to the game they were averaging less than a goal scored per game whilst having conceded 72 goals in 24 games, exactly three per game. But they didn’t just beat Wrexham, they beat them 4-0 but defeat at Accrington yesterday has finally condemned them to a bottom place finish.
A seventh successive defeat for Burnley, in which we’ve conceded 22 goals, has left us stranded next to bottom and it is now only possible for us to climb one place higher and that would only happen should we win both of our remaining games and Carlisle lose their final game at Morecambe this Saturday.
It was a very much younger side that we fielded against Preston last Saturday with none of the second year scholars, who are due to leave the club at the end of the season, involved.
