Our under-23s are next to bottom of Division 2 in Premier League 2 and this afternoon we play Southampton, the one team below us in the table.

We are the only two teams in the division without a win and both of us have one point from four games with us ahead of the Saints on goal difference.

Having lost our first three games against West Brom, Sunderland and Newcastle, we secured our first point nine days ago with a 1-1 home draw against Wolves. Southampton’s point came in a 0-0 draw at Nottingham Forest in their second fixture. They had previously been beaten 3-0 at home against Norwich, their only home game to date, and have subsequently lost away games at Middlesbrough (2-1) and Fulham (3-0).

While we’ve scored five times, two of them in stoppage time at West Brom after we’d trailed 3-0, Southampton’s only goal was an 86th penalty at Middlesbrough converted by Kazeem Olaigbe, but a penalty at the other end four minutes later condemned them to defeat.

Southampton were relegated at the end of last season and, as such, there is no previous game to look back on as we meet for the first time in Premier League 2.

The game was originally scheduled to be played at the training ground but has been moved to St. Mary’s. Unfortunately, for any Burnley fans in the area, all tickets for this fixture have been allocated and there are no tickets available at the ground today.

Kick off is 2 p.m. with the winners having the opportunity to move up two or three places in the table.
