When we last reported on the under-23 and under-18 leagues there were just two games to be played, one at under-23 level and one at under-18 level.

The Premier League 2 play-offs for the under-23s were underway with Stoke and Wolves having won through to the final. Stoke had beaten Nottingham Forest 2-0 while Wolves won a penalty shootout against Norwich to claim their place in the final.

That final was played at Molineux on Monday of this week with Wolves winning the game 2-0 in front of a crowd of 4,936. Both their goals came in the first half and were both scored by Luke Cundle who had joined them from Burnley as a youngster.

It mean Wolves will be joining Fulham in Division 1 next season with Leeds and Derby the two teams to suffer relegation.

There is no promotion and relegation in the U18 Premier League. It is split geographically with north and south divisions. They were won by Manchester City and Southampton during this season and, as is customary, the two sides met to determine the overall U18 Premier League winners.

The game was played at Southampton’s St. Mary’s Stadium with 13,035 and the home side took an early lead with Kamari Doyle scoring for them. But two goals later in the first half, scored by Taione Sodje and Adedire Mebude gave City a 2-1 win leaving the winners of their leagues at under-18, under-23 and first team level.

Speculation has suggested we could be losing our place in these leagues after just two years. It can only be hoped that’s not the case; playing at this league is key to our development as an academy.
