Friend to ref Spurs away for third time
Tomorrow will see us make our seventh visit to Spurs in the Premier League with Kevin Friend refereeing this fixture for the first time.
He was in charge on what proved to be our final visit to White Hart Lane in December 2016 and in the same month in 2019 was the referee when we made our first, and to date, our only visit to the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Tomorrow will be his 27th Burnley game and he’s led the way with visits to the touchline monitor. At Norwich last season he was the first referee to review an incident via the screen which led to him sending off Norwich’s Emiliano Buendia and he was the first referee to use the screen at Turf Moor in a Premier League game which saw him reverse the decision to card Robbie Brady and award us a free kick for a foul by Luke Shaw.
He’s refereed a total of 21 games this season in which there have been 47 yellow and two red cards. Of those yellows, 25 have gone to home team players and 22 to away team players. Both red cards came early in the season. He dismissed Brighton’s Yves Bissouma at the end of their 3-0 win at Newcastle in September and then dismissed Lucas Digne in their 2-0 loss at Southampton in the following month.
Friend’s last game was Monday’s M23 derby between Brighton and Crystal Palace that Palace won 2-1 with a stoppage time goal from Christian Benteke. Brighton had the only two players yellow carded, Dan Burn and Joel Veltman.
Simon Hooper is fourth official tomorrow; his last Burnley game was our 2-1 win at Southampton last season. Martin Atkinson will be on VAR duty and he most recently refereed our home game against Manchester City at the beginning of this month.
