Andre Marriner will referee tomorrow’s home game against Arsenal and it will be the third time he’s refereed a fixture between the two clubs.

He was in charge of the League Cup tie in 2008 when two Kevin McDonald goals gave us a 2-0 win and a place in the semi-finals; more recently he was the referee when we were beaten 5-0 in what was Arsène Wenger’s final home game in charge of the Gunners.

Burnley games haven’t been regular fixtures for him over the years. His first Burnley game was a 1-1 draw against Southampton back in 2005 and his most recent game, also against Southampton earlier this season, was just his 14th.

The Southampton game was one of 17 Premier League games he’s refereed this season and two Championship fixtures can be added to that along with one game in each of the League Cup and FA Cup and the Community Shield game. He yellow carded Liverpool’s James Milner in Arsenal’s penalty shoot out win in the Community shields and in the other 21 games  there have been 61 yellow cards of which 30 have gone to home team players and 31 to away team players.

There have been no red cards in the games he’s refereed this season and we have to go all the way back to November 2019 for the last one when he dismissed Watford’s Christian Kabasele in their 2-0 win at Watford.

Marriner’s most recent game was just two days ago when he was in charge of the Crystal Palace v Manchester United game at Selhurst Park which ended 0-0. The only yellow card in that game went to Palace substitute Jairo Riedewald.

Anthony Taylor, whose last Burnley game was the home draw against Brighton four weeks ago, is fourth official with Kevin Friend, referee at Spurs last weekend, on VAR duty.
