Win takes under-23s up four places
Kicking off last Monday at Newcastle, our under-23s were third from bottom of Premier League 2 Division 2 but such is the tightness of this league that the 2-0 win took us up four places to seventh and leaves us just three points behind second place Stoke with a game in hand.
Leeds, like us in their first season in this league, are currently running away with it. They kicked off the week with an eight point lead over both Aston Villa and Wolves who both lost their games, Villa at Reading and Wolves at Stoke. Meanwhile Leeds won again, beating Sunderland at home, and have now increased their lead to ten points with Stoke having moved up to second.
It is a crazy league with just eight points separating Stoke from Newcastle who sit bottom of the table and so one good result can see a team climb a few places while a defeat can result in dropping down.
Leeds might be a long way in front in Division 2 but the Division 1 leaders, thankfully, sit only one point ahead of second. The leaders are our local rivals from just a few miles down the M65. Spurs are second but third and fourth, Manchester City and Chelsea, do have games in hand which could change things.
West Ham won last Friday so it is a lot closer at the bottom. The win took their season total to eight points and they are now just three points behind Southampton.
The player featured this week is defender Richard Nartey who has had a busy week. He was with the first team last Sunday at his previous club Chelsea, played for the under-23s at Newcastle on the following day before being named as a substitute against Manchester City.
